Soup for Babies, How to Make Sweet Potato Lentil Soup

Sweet Potato Lentil Soup
Sweet Potato Lentil Soup

My ex-colleague, Shilpi, is such an exuberant and enthusiastic person that her positive energy permeates even through Facebook. Shilpi’s regular updates about her activities with her children, Rishabh and Ryka, are truly delightful. She has been very encouraging about my blog right from the beginning and participates on my Facebook page actively. If you’ll remember, on my Facebook page, I had shared a post about the health benefits of sweet potato.

I had asked you’ll to share your favorite sweet potato recipe. Shilpi had replied saying she likes sweet potato fries, and for Ryka she makes sweet potato lentil soup. I asked her to share the recipe and pics for the blog. And this awesome lady sent across the recipe and pics the next day. At this point I must mention Amla as well. I know Amla through my blog and she is another super enthu mom. Whenever I ask her to share her recipes and pics, I get them within a couple of days. I always end up feeling charged up whenever I interact with super moms like Shilpi and Amla.:-)

Shilpi’s daughter, Ryka, is an absolute doll. She recently got a haircut, which I fell completely in love with. I asked Shilpi to send me one of their pics with Ryka’s new haircut; doesn’t she look adorable? Now without much ado I’ll hand over the baton to Shilpi. Shilpi having worked as a journalist is good at writing and I have retained what she wrote as is…

Shilpi writes: My daughter, Ryka, is 14 months old and ever since she started on solids I have been trying to introduce her to a variety of foods. It is a case of once bitten twice shy. When my son, who is nearly 8, started solids I used to give him only rice based foods, mostly khichdi with lots of veggies. Though, he was always a healthy baby he grew up to be a timid eater. I didn’t want the same thing to happen to Ryka, I want her to be a intrepid foodie, so since early I am on the job.

Sweet potato is considered one of the healthiest vegetables so that is one dominant veggie on her food chart. I tried to give her sweet potato mashed but she spits it out. So I made this lentil and sweet potato soup, and as it is a bit runny she likes it and eats it without any fuss.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 sweet potato
  • 1/2 cup of red lentils
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • a few sprigs of coriander
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp lemon juice

Instructions

  • Boil the sweet potato and mash it.
  • Boil half a cup of red lentils.
  • Heat a pan, add butter, and and then add cumin seeds.
  • When cumin seeds start to splutter, add chopped onion, and sauté it.
  • Add the mashed potato and sauté for a while.
  • Pour boiled lentils in the pan.
  • Add coriander leaves and salt, and let the mixture simmer for at least ten minutes on low heat.
  • Turn off heat and add lemon juice.
  • When the mixture cools down , put it in a mixer and blend it until smooth.
  • Heat the soup before serving it.

Notes

If you are making this soup for babies, use powdered cumin seeds (jeera powder) instead of whole seeds. Because the seeds may not get ground properly when you blend them along with sweet potato and lentils.

  1. Hi mukta,
Your new blog template is very good. :-)
I keep asking you my queries, but you really provide me good suggestions. My daughter is 8 months and 1 week now. She is now refusing to eat what she used to eat previously. I give her dalia, khichdi, ragi porridge, poha and upma.
Could you suggest me some evening snack receipes and some finger food ideas?
And also suggest me egg receipes for her age. I used to give her coooked egg yolk mixed with banana, avocado and sweet potato in the morning breakfast. But now she doesn't like to eat that way.

    Thanks.

    • Wow Meena, I must compliment you on the range of food you're making for your 8 month-old baby. You can try giving her different soups, barley/oats upma for snacks now. Make sure it's overcooked and she can chew it properly. I didn't start giving Devansh finger food so early. So I don't have my recipes to share but I did come across this nice article, you might find it useful:

You probably know this but I'll mention anyways. :) Bbefore you start giving her finger food, please ensure the following:
      – Your baby is able to sit up on her own without your help.

      – Your baby can chew soft food properly using her gums.

      – Your baby is observed at all times while she's having her food.

      Good luck. :)

    • Hi Zanele,

You can find the recipes I gave my kiddo as a baby at this link: https://mummumtime.com/category/baby-food-recipes/

You may need to tweak/ modify them depending on your baby’s developmental stage and eating preferences. Many mothers follow no salt, no sugar before 1 year old. I didn’t add sugar in my baby’s food for a really long time; I used jaggery instead. Also, we Indians start adding spices such as cumin seeds (powdered of course) in our baby’s food from pretty early on. You will need to take a call on when you want to add those in your baby’s food.
